How wide can a motorized shade be?
Motorized roller, solar and blackout cellular shades are made up to 115" wide and 120" tall. Zebra blinds go to 96". For a wider opening — a wall of glass — we split it into two or three shades on one remote so they move together.
Battery or solar motor — which should I choose?
Battery if you can reach the headrail with a charging cable a few times a year; it is the simpler, cheaper motor. Solar-panel motor if the window is high, out of reach, or gets steady daylight — the panel sits on the glass side of the headrail and keeps the battery topped up. Both are priced live in the configurator.
Can several shades run from one remote?
Yes. The remote has multiple channels, so a bank of three shades across a wide window can be one channel (all together) with each shade also on its own channel for individual control.
Where manual stops working
A shade’s weight is roughly its area, so a 96" × 84" roller carries about four times the fabric of a 48" × 42" one. A cordless spring sized for a bedroom window will not hold a shade that size level, and a chain becomes a two-handed job with a lot of chain on the floor. Past about 72" wide we recommend a motor for every fabric; past 96" we consider it the only sensible option.
Power: battery or solar panel
Every motorized shade here uses either a rechargeable-battery motor — a lithium pack inside the tube, charged from a cable a few times a year depending on use — or a solar motor, the same motor with a slim panel that faces the glass and keeps the battery charged from daylight. There is no wiring into the wall on either. Choose the solar panel when the headrail is hard to reach or the window gets sun for a few hours a day.
Control: remote or smart home
The basic remote runs several shades on separate channels plus an all-together channel. The smart-home-compatible remote adds a bridge so the shades appear in Alexa, Google Home, HomeKit or a Matter hub — schedules, sunrise routines, voice. Wider than the limit? Order two or three shades and group them on one remote channel — they raise and lower together and the joins sit on the window mullions where a light line is least visible.

Weight
Fabric weight grows with width and height. Past ~72" wide a cordless spring struggles and a chain takes both hands.
Straight roll
A wide shade lifted unevenly telescopes on the tube and creases. A motor turns the tube evenly end to end.
Battery or solar panel
Rechargeable-battery motor (charge from a cable a few times a year) or a solar-panel motor that tops itself up at the window.

Is a motorized shade quieter than I expect?
The motors are quiet enough for a bedroom — a low hum for the few seconds of travel, not a whine. You hear the fabric more than the motor on a large shade.
What if the window is both large and high up?
Same products; choose the solar-panel motor so you never need to reach the headrail to charge it, and mount with outside brackets on the wall above the frame. Our page on motorized blinds for high windows goes into bracket access and charging in detail.
Which fabric for a large window?
Solar screen if the window is the view and glare is the problem; blackout roller if it is a bedroom or media room; light-filtering roller for a soft glow; blackout cellular if the room is cold in winter and hot in summer — the honeycomb cells insulate the biggest pane in the house.
